In real time, optical coherence tomography (OCT) provides high-resolution cross-sectional
images of the macula very similar to those obtained by in vivo histopathological
sections. OCT represents a major advance in the diagnostics of retinal disease
and has found rapid acceptance among retinal specialists worldwide. OCT is not
a substitute for a thorough clinical examination, fundus imaging or various angiographic
techniques, but a superb adjunctive tool for probing the mysteries of retinal
disease. Throughout this highly-illustrated text of both normal and diseased appearances,
OCT images are accompanied by fluorescein angiograms and standard fluoroscopic
scans, thereby providing the reader with an abundant supply of correlative images.
